Thigh High Socks for Thick Thighs: Sizing & How to Stop Them Rolling Down

Extra long 70 cm thigh high socks – front view

The best thigh high socks for thick thighs are extra long (70–80 cm), very stretchy and have a wide, flat top band, so the fabric reaches the upper thigh without being stretched thin and the band sits on the leg instead of digging in. If regular pairs roll down or stop above the knee, the problem is almost always length and band width, not your legs.

This guide goes deeper than our general guide to thigh highs for men: here we focus only on fit for fuller, muscular or longer legs, and on the question everyone asks sooner or later: how do you keep them up?

Why thigh highs roll down on bigger thighs

A thigh high has to do two jobs at once: cover the length of your leg and grip the widest part of it. On thick thighs both jobs get harder, and three things usually go wrong:

  • The sock is too short. When a pair has to stretch lengthwise to reach your thigh, it also gets narrower. The band ends up below the widest point, where the leg tapers, and gravity pulls it down towards the knee.
  • The band is too narrow. A thin elastic edge concentrates all the pressure on one line. On soft skin it bites in, folds over and then rolls.
  • The band sits on the move. Every step flexes the thigh muscles. A band placed right where the leg changes shape most will creep with each step.

So the fix is not a tighter sock. It is a longer one, with a band that spreads its grip over more surface.

How to measure for thigh high socks for thick thighs

Most thigh highs are one size, so measurements help you choose the right style and length rather than a size label. Take two numbers with a soft tape:

  • Thigh circumference at the point where you want the band to sit, usually a hand’s width below the crotch. Measure standing, relaxed, not flexed.
  • Leg length from the floor (or your heel) up the outside of the leg to that same point.

If your leg length is close to or longer than the stated length of a regular pair, look at extra long styles. A sock that only just reaches is a sock that will be fully stretched and will slide down. You want a little length to spare.

What size thigh high socks should I get?

For one-size socks, check the length and any weight guidance in the description. Our extra long thigh high socks in 70 cm are cut in size XL for tall legs and bigger thighs, and the extra long opaque stockings in 80 cm are the longest option in the shop. Some delicate styles have limits: our lace top glossy satin pair, for example, is recommended up to about 70 kg body weight, so on heavier legs a knit or opaque style will be more comfortable.

How much will thigh high socks stretch?

Knit fabrics with elastane stretch a lot in width, but there is a trade-off: every centimetre they stretch around your thigh is taken from their length. That is why a pair that looks long in the photo can end up surprisingly low on a fuller leg.

TypeStretch in widthBest for thick thighs?
Cotton-blend knit (70 cm)High, stays opaqueYes, the easiest choice
Opaque nylon or polyester (80 cm)High, smooth finishYes, especially for tall legs
Sheer nylon with wide bandGood, gets more see-throughYes, if the band has grip

Sheer stockings also become more transparent as they stretch. That is not a fault, just something to expect on bigger legs: a sheer black can look closer to a light grey across the thigh.

How to keep thigh highs up without a garter

Do thigh high hose stay up on their own? Many do, as long as length and band are right. If yours still slip, try these in order:

  • Pick a longer pair. Extra long socks let the band sit at the widest, most stable part of the thigh.
  • Choose a wide band with grip. Our glossy sheer thigh high stockings have a plain wide band with an anti-slip grip, and the opaque nylon thigh highs are cut extra high, ending just under the seat.
  • Pull them up in stages. Roll the sock down to the toe, put your foot in and ease the fabric up in small sections, so the stretch is even along the whole leg instead of bunching at the knee.
  • Keep skin and band dry. Body lotion or oil under the band makes it slide. Moisturise after you take them off, not before.
  • Use sock glue. Roll-on sock adhesive is made for exactly this. Apply a thin line where the band will sit, let it get tacky for a few seconds, then press the band on. Test a small patch of skin first.

What holds up thigh high stockings when nothing else works

The classic answer is a garter belt. It takes the weight off the band completely, so even very sheer stockings stay put all day. We do not sell garter belts, but most of our stockings can be paired with any garter belt you already own. Single leg garters (a separate elastic ring worn over the band) are another simple option for socks.

For thick thighs, also think about what you wear on top. A tight skirt hem that rubs against the band will push it down with every step. A flared skirt or a dress with a full petticoat leaves the band alone.

Comfort tips for fuller legs

  • If the band leaves deep marks after an hour, the pair is too small or too short for you. Size up in length rather than putting up with it.
  • Avoid folding the band over to make it tighter. A doubled band creates a hard edge that cuts in and rolls even faster.
  • Elastane loses grip with heat, so wash by hand in cold water and dry flat. Our guide on how to wash lingerie works just as well for stockings.

Frequently asked questions

Do thigh high socks fit thick thighs?

Yes, as long as you choose extra long, stretchy pairs with a wide band. Length matters more than circumference, because a short sock stretched over a big thigh ends up too low and rolls.

Why do my thigh highs keep rolling down?

Usually the sock is too short, so the band sits below the widest part of the thigh, or the band is too narrow and folds over. A longer pair with a wide or grip band fixes most cases.

How do you keep thigh highs up without a garter?

Choose the right length, keep skin under the band free of lotion, pull the sock up evenly and, if needed, use roll-on sock glue.

Are 70 cm or 80 cm thigh highs better for tall men?

Both are made for long legs. The 70 cm knit socks are thicker and casual, while the 80 cm opaque stockings are smoother and reach higher on very tall legs.
