Stockings for men are thigh-length hosiery that either stay up on their own with a grippy band (stay-ups) or clip onto a garter belt. For most men, femboys and crossdressers the easiest start is a stretchy, one-size stay-up in sheer black or a glossy finish, long enough to reach mid-thigh. This guide is about fashion stockings for outfits and style, not medical compression stockings.
If you already know the basics, this article goes one step further: how each type of stocking behaves on a male leg, which finish gives which look, and how to avoid the typical first-pair mistakes. For a broader overview of sock and stocking types, sizing by thigh and calf and general care, read our guide to thigh highs for men first.
Can men wear stockings?
Yes. Hose were part of everyday menswear in Europe for centuries, and today men wear stockings for all kinds of reasons: to complete a crossdressing or femboy outfit, under a maid dress or skirt, for the smooth feel of nylon, or simply because they like how they look. Nothing about a pair of stockings belongs to one gender. What does matter is fit, and that is where a male leg needs slightly different choices.
The usual differences are longer legs, bigger feet, a wider thigh and calf, and leg hair. Length and foot size decide whether the band reaches the right spot and whether the heel sits where it should. Leg hair changes how sheer nylon looks and how well a grip band holds. Keep these four points in mind and choosing men’s stockings becomes much easier.
Stay-up stockings vs garter stockings
There are two ways a stocking can stay in place on the thigh, and the choice shapes the whole experience.
Stay-ups (hold-ups)
Stay-ups have a wide elastic band with a grip on the inside, so they hold on their own. No belt, no clips, no extra layer under your clothes. That makes them the natural first choice for most men. A few tips help them stay put: put them on clean, dry skin with no lotion where the band sits, place the band on the firm upper part of the thigh rather than right above the knee, and consider trimming or shaving the band area, because grip is always better on smooth skin.
Garter stockings
Garter stockings have a lace or plain top without grip and are held up by the straps of a garter belt. They give the classic vintage, pin-up or French maid look and stay very secure for long wear, but they take a few more steps to put on. Our lace top sheer stockings for garter belts are made for exactly this. We don’t sell garter belts ourselves, so pair them with any belt that fits your waist.
| Type | How it stays up | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay-ups | Elastic band with inner grip | First pair, skirts, everyday wear | Can slide on very slim or hairy thighs |
| Garter stockings | Clips on a garter belt | Maid, vintage and lingerie looks | You need a belt and a few extra minutes |
| Thigh high socks | Thick knitted elastic top | Casual, kawaii and sporty outfits | Not sheer, warmer, more casual look |
Sheer, glossy or patterned: which finish suits you?
Classic sheer
Sheer black is the timeless option: elegant, slimming and easy to combine with almost anything. Our sheer thigh high stockings with a plain band in black, navy blue or white are an inexpensive basic and also work with a garter belt, thanks to the smooth band.
Glossy
Glossy stockings have an oily shine that catches the light and makes the leg look smooth and polished. The glossy sheer thigh high stockings for men come in eight colours and have a wide band with anti-slip grip, so they are a good choice if you want a stay-up that feels a little more special.
Patterned and coloured
Stripes, crosses, contrast bands and bright colours add personality and are also more forgiving with leg hair than plain sheer nylon. The black striped sheer thigh high stockings for men have a vertical-stripe panel above the knee and a soft stay-up band, and are cut long enough for men’s legs.
A note on leg hair: sheer nylon shows everything underneath. If you don’t want to shave, choose darker shades, patterns or opaque stockings. If you do shave, do it a day before rather than right before, so the skin is calm when the band sits on it.
Men’s thigh high stockings: getting the length right
Most of our stockings are one size with plenty of stretch, so width is rarely the problem. Length is. Measure from your heel to the point on your thigh where you want the band to sit, usually mid to upper thigh, and compare it with the product description. If you have long legs or fuller thighs, extra long styles of 70 cm or 80 cm are worth a look in our thigh high socks and stockings collection.
Foot size counts too. Several of our sheer styles are made for a foot length of about 25 to 27 cm. If your foot is longer, the heel will sit too low and the toe will pull, so a knitted or opaque style is more comfortable. Some glossy satin-look styles are recommended for a body weight up to about 70 kg, which is always stated on the product page.
- The heel sits on your heel, not around the ankle.
- There is no loose fabric at the ankle or knee.
- The band lies flat on the thigh without rolling or digging in.
- The top ends where you planned, not halfway down the thigh.
How to put on stockings without laddering them
- File rough nails and take off rings first, as a snag is the most common way a new pair gets ruined.
- Sit down and gather the stocking with your thumbs all the way down to the toe.
- Slide your toes in, line up the heel, then unroll the stocking slowly up the leg.
- Smooth the fabric as you go so the stretch is spread evenly.
- Place the band on the firm part of the thigh, or clip it to the garter straps.
Stockings for men: which pair should you buy first?
If you are unsure, start with plain black stay-ups with a grip band, such as the glossy pair in black or the striped sheer pair. If you want a maid or vintage look and already own a garter belt, choose lace top stockings. If you just want to experiment, the simple sheer pair with a plain band is the cheapest way in. All of them ship free across Europe.
And if stockings are part of your very first outfit, our guide to crossdressing for beginners helps you plan the rest of the look, from clothes to confidence.
Frequently asked questions
Are these compression stockings?
No. They are fashion stockings made of nylon with elastane or polyester and are not designed for medical use. If you need compression stockings for health reasons, ask a pharmacist or doctor.
Do stay-up stockings work on hairy legs?
They can, but the grip holds much better on smooth skin. Trimming or shaving just the area where the band sits already helps a lot.
What size stockings should a man buy?
Most of our stockings are one size and very stretchy. Check the length and, for sheer styles, the foot length of about 25 to 27 cm.
Can I wear stockings without a garter belt?
Yes, choose stay-ups with a grip band. Lace top stockings made for garter clips need a belt to stay up.
How do I wash stockings?
Hand wash them cold, then let them dry flat. Never use a tumble dryer.
