The main thigh high socks materials are cotton-blend knit, thicker cable knit, nylon with elastane (opaque, sheer or glossy), polyester, velvet, mesh and fishnet. Cotton and knit are the warmest and most robust everyday choice, nylon gives a smooth, elegant leg, and fishnet or mesh is about the look rather than warmth. Almost all of them contain some elastane or spandex so they stretch and stay up.

Thigh high socks materials: which is best?
There is no single “best” material – it depends on the season and the outfit. Here is a quick overview:
| Material | Look | Warmth | Breathability | Durability | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton-blend knit | Opaque, matte, casual | Medium | Good | High | Everyday wear, shorts, skirts | |
| Cable knit | Chunky, cosy texture | High | Good | High | Autumn and winter outfits | |
| Opaque nylon / polyester | Smooth, solid colour | Medium | Medium | Medium to high | Colourful looks, dresses | |
| Sheer nylon | See-through, refined | Low | Good | Low to medium | Dresses, maid outfits | |
| Glossy / satin-look nylon | High shine | Low | Medium | Low to medium | Evening and dressy looks | |
| Velvet | Soft, rich, matte | Medium | Medium | Medium | Kawaii and lolita styles | |

Cotton thigh high socks
Cotton thigh high socks are what most people picture when they think of “over the knee socks”: a soft, matte, opaque knit, often in solid colours or stripes. Pure cotton would sag, so good pairs use a cotton blend with elastane for stretch and recovery.
Why choose cotton blend:
- It feels soft and natural against the skin and is comfortable for a whole day.
- It is breathable, so it works indoors and in mild weather without overheating.
- It is forgiving: thicker knit hides small creases and looks good even when the fit is not perfect.
- It survives plenty of wear and washing.
Our extra long thigh high socks (70 cm) are a cotton-blend knit with elastane in 14 colours. The extra length is helpful if you are tall or if regular socks stop just above your knee.
Cable knit and sweater thigh high socks
Cable knit (sometimes called “sweater” thigh high socks) uses a thicker yarn with a raised, twisted pattern, like a winter jumper. These are the warmest thigh high socks you can get without going to wool tights, and the texture looks great with pleated skirts and boots.
They are slightly bulkier, so they suit looser shoes and boots better than slim heels. Try our cable knit over the knee socks with stripes – a cotton-blend knit with two sporty stripes at the cuff, in burgundy, black or white.
Nylon and elastane: opaque, sheer and athletic
Nylon (polyamide) mixed with elastane or spandex is the classic stocking fabric. It is thin, smooth and very stretchy, and the same fibre can look completely different depending on how densely it is knitted:
- Opaque nylon thigh high socks give a solid, even colour and a sleek leg. They are lighter than cotton and come in bright colours that cotton rarely matches.
- Sheer nylon is see-through and elegant, ideal under a dress or with a maid outfit.
- Athletic-style thigh highs often use a smooth nylon-spandex knit with stripes at the top – thin enough to wear all day, but more robust than a sheer stocking.
What does denier mean?
Denier (den) measures the thickness of the yarn. As a rough guide: under 15 den is ultra sheer, 15–30 den is classic sheer, 40–60 den is semi-opaque and 70 den or more is opaque. Lower denier looks finer but snags more easily; higher denier is warmer and lasts longer.
Glossy and satin-look stockings
Glossy thigh high stockings (also called “shiny” or “oil shine”) are usually nylon and spandex knitted to reflect light. Satin-look stockings use the same idea with a silkier, liquid sheen. They are not made of real satin, but they feel very smooth and slippery on the skin.
These are the dressiest option, but also the most delicate: watch out for rings, rough nails and Velcro. Our glossy sheer thigh high stockings are nylon and spandex with an anti-slip band and come in eight colours.
Velvet and mesh
Velvet thigh highs have a soft, slightly fuzzy surface and a rich, matte colour. They are warmer than sheer stockings and look especially cute with bows and pastel or lolita outfits. Mesh is a fine, open net that looks sheer from a distance; it is light and airy and perfect for summer.
Fishnet and polyester
Fishnets are usually polyester and nylon. The net size changes everything: big nets are bold and graphic, mid nets are the classic, fine nets look almost like a patterned stocking. Fishnet gives almost no warmth but is very breathable and surprisingly durable, because there is little fabric to snag. Our fishnet thigh high stockings come in big, mid and small net plus a heart pattern, and you can layer them over opaque stockings for colder days.
Polyester also appears in many opaque and lace stockings. It holds colour well and dries quickly.
Warm vs breathable: choosing by season
- Winter: cable knit or thick cotton-blend knit; layer fishnets over opaque stockings for extra coverage.
- Spring and autumn: cotton-blend socks, opaque nylon or velvet.
- Summer: sheer nylon, mesh or fishnet – light and airy.
- Evenings and special outfits: glossy or satin-look stockings, any time of year.
Durability and care by material
Whatever the material, thigh highs last longest when you hand wash them in cold water with a mild detergent, press the water out gently instead of wringing, and dry them flat away from heat. Never use a tumble dryer: heat damages elastane and makes bands lose their grip. Knit and cotton socks are the most forgiving; sheer and glossy stockings need the most care. FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the best material for thigh high socks?
For everyday wear a cotton-blend knit with elastane is the best all-rounder, while nylon is better for a smooth, elegant look.
Which thigh high socks are the warmest?
Cable knit and thick cotton-blend knit are the warmest, and velvet comes next.
What does denier mean on stockings?
Denier is the thickness of the yarn: low numbers such as 15 den are sheer, while 70 den and above is opaque.
Are glossy satin thigh highs made of real satin?
Usually not; they are nylon and spandex knitted to give a satin-like sheen.
Can I put thigh high socks in the dryer?
It is better not to, because heat weakens the elastane and the band loses its grip; dry them flat instead.
