Garter Belt for Men: What It Is and How to Wear Stockings With One

A garter belt for men is a belt worn around the waist or hips with four or six adjustable straps that clip onto the top of your stockings and hold them up. From it hang straps, usually four or six, each ending in a small clip. The clips hold the top band of a stocking so it stays in place all day without needing a grippy silicone band.

Don’t confuse it with a single garter, the decorative band worn on one leg at weddings. A garter belt holds up both stockings and is worn around the body, not on one leg.

How does a garter clip work?

Each clip has two parts: a metal or plastic loop and a small rubber or plastic button. You place the button behind the top of the stocking, so the fabric covers it, then slide the loop down over the button and pull it up again until it locks. The fabric is trapped between the two and can’t slip out.

Garter belt for men: sizing for a male waist

Most garter belts are designed with a female figure in mind, so a few checks make a big difference for a male body.

• Waist size: measure where you want the belt to sit, at the natural waist or lower on the hips, and pick a belt with an adjustable hook-and-eye closure that matches that measurement.

How to put on a garter belt and stockings

The order matters. Follow these steps and the whole thing takes less than five minutes.

• 1. Belt first. Fasten the belt around your waist or hips. Many people close the hooks at the front where they can see them, then turn the belt round so the closure sits at the back.
• 2. Sit down and put on the stockings. Roll each stocking down to the toe, slide it on, line up the heel and unroll it up the leg until the top band sits on the upper thigh.
• 3. Attach the front clips. Put the button behind the stocking top in the middle of the front of the thigh, slide the loop over it and pull up to lock.
• 4. Attach the back clips. Stand up, bend slightly and do the same at the back of each thigh. If you find this tricky, attach them while sitting on the edge of a chair.
• 5. Side clips. With a six-strap belt, fasten the side clips last.
• 6. Adjust. Shorten or lengthen the straps so the stockings are gently taut. They should not pull the band into a point or tug when you sit down.

Briefs over or under the garter belt?

Both work, and it depends on what you want. Briefs worn over the belt and straps are the practical option: you can take them off without unclipping anything. Briefs worn under the belt give the classic lingerie look, but you will need to undo the straps first. For everyday wear and longer events, most people prefer briefs on top.

Can you wear a garter belt without stockings?

Yes, as a lingerie piece on its own, with the straps hanging loose or tucked in. It looks deliberate rather than unfinished when the belt matches the rest of your outfit. Most people still pair it with stockings, because that is what the straps are made for.
